We're screwed. Mom and dad trusted us for one weekend, and we screwed it up. How did this even happen? I don't know if we will be able to solve this problem. So, where do we go from here?
"There is plenty of money and food for the weekend. We're trusting you this one time. If you do well, then maybe we will feel comfortable allowing you to stay home alone a few weekends while I go with your dad on his work trips."
"Mommmm, we'll be fine geesh we're old enough to feed ourselves, then we can stay home alone."
"Make sure your brother completes his school project. As I said, this weekend will show if we can trust you."
"Okay, we love you, tootles. Bye-bye."
Mom walked over and kissed me on my forehead and gave my brother a hug and kiss as well. Dad had to practically drag her out of the door behind him.
"So pizza tonight?"
"Yea, I'm down. You do have to finish your project, though. Dad likes when mom goes with him on his trips."
"Ugh, Don't be a parent. I plan to finish the project before they get back. I have to go to the basement and get some things, though. Can you come with me?"
"Awe, are you scared of the dark? is the little baby scared?"
"Stop it! I'm not scared. I don't know where all the arts and craft crap mom uses is, and you are always making things, so you should know where it is."
"Okay, I'll go with you. I'm going to place a pizza order. Since it is Marcos pizza, we should have time to go down and get all that you need."
"Cool."
I went to the kitchen and found the menu. I picked up the kitchen phone and dialed the number. After being on hold for like 20 minutes, I finally placed an order. Since they were busy, I was told it would take about 40 minutes, which was pretty standard for them.
"What took you so long? Did you have to relearn how to read to call them?"
"Don't be a brat. Come on, let's go to the basement before I change my mind."
I grabbed him off the couch, and we headed to the basement. The basement always made me feel icky. It was dark and muggy. The stairs always felt like they were going to give way when you walked down them.
When we entered, it was darker than usual. I felt for the light switch on the wall and turned it on. Why couldn't mom be like normal moms and have a craft room? We continued down the stairs.
"Okay, you look through those bins over there and see if you see anything you can use, and I will look over here. Your project is on space and whatnot, right?"
"Yea, sis, space, and whatnot. How did you even make it to high school?"
"Shut up and just look for materials so we can head back upstairs."
We continued to go through the craft items, and I tripped over a big black box. I caught myself before I fell, but my toe vibrated in pain.
"Ouch, crap, that hurt."
"You good?"
"Yes, I think so. I don't remember this box being here before."
"I wonder what it is." He bent down and opened the lid. In the box were silks of all colors. They were bright, beautiful colors. I don't think I have ever seen colors so beautiful before. I picked them up, and they were soft, so soft.
As we continued to dig in the box, we found a skull key.
"Why would mom have something like this?"
"I don't know, but it's a little freaky." Just then, the basement door slammed shut.
"What just happened?" We both ran up the stairs. The door was locked. We tried pushing the door. Nothing happened.
"Wait! Look at the keyhole. I think the key we found will fit it. Also, weird that mom keeps the key down here."
I ran back down and grabbed the key. When I slid the key in the door, it fit the hole. We both breathed a sigh of relief. We turned the key and pushed it open. When the door opened, it was pure darkness. It looked like the sky but with no stars or moon, and there were creepy noises. We immediately shut the door and locked it.
"Ummm, what the heck was that?"
"I don't know. This is creepy."
"Okay, maybe we're just tired and hungry. Try it again; I'm sure there's an explanation."
I unlocked the door again, and this time when the door opened in front of us, stood a beautiful meadow. The green grass was accompanied by yellow and purple flowers that grew up from the ground. There were large green trees that lined the back of the field, and past them, there were rolling green hills.
"Holy smokes, this is beautiful. I have to explore."
"No, Jax, come back." I ran after him. When I turned around, the door had disappeared.
"Oh crap!"
"What? It's gorgeous here."
"The door is gone."
"What? why didn't you hold it open?"
"Maybe because someone decided to run off into a freaking field."
"Well, that's neither here nor there. Let's walk around. I'm sure there's a way to get back."
One weekend. I begged mom to trust us with one weekend, and now I've gotten us stuck in I don't even know where. It seemed we walked for hours before we came upon what looked like a city. As we got closer, we saw buildings built with what looked like clay. The streets were cobble.
"You must be the children of Judith. Welcome"
We turned around, and there stood a tall fairy. The sun made her skin glisten. She had long pink hair that wrapped around her shoulders and large pink wings.
"Ummm, who the heck are you? how do you know our mom?"
"Hello Jamie, I'm Pearl Littlegarden. Judith has been a regular here in our town since she was a girl."
"And where exactly are we?"
"You are in Angelfalls, the town of the Fey. We welcome you."
"How do we get home?"
"When you both are ready."
"huh?"
"Jax doesn't seem like he's ready to go home." She pointed, and Jax talked with another fairy who held a sword across the road. I walked over to him.
"Jax, we have to go get home. We can't stay here."
"Oh, come on, Jamie. I never thought I'd ever see a world like this in real life. I've only seen it in my games. Please a few more hours, and then we can go home."
"Fine! A few more hours, and then we are leaving."
"The sun will set soon, which means the door will not appear. It only appears when the sun is in the sky. It's for the protection of us all from the dark world."
"Um, what? so we're stuck here?"
"Not stuck. You're visiting for the night."
"Sweet! Jamie, this weekend is so much better than I thought it would be."
"I will give you a tour and show you where to find food and lodging for the night."
I was not fond of this and wanted to go home, but the fairy said I couldn't unless Jax wanted to go home. So I sucked it up and went on the tour. Petal showed us the town and told us the history of Angelfalls. We had dinner at a tavern. Petal then led us upstairs to our rooms. I made sure we had rooms next to each other. I was so exhausted and full I didn't remember falling asleep.
"JAMIE! WAKE UP!"
"What? what's wrong?" I jumped up at the screams of my brother. When I sat up, we were no longer in a room in the beds where we fell asleep. Instead, we were in a cell, and it was dark.
One weekend! All I asked for was one weekend that mom and dad trusted my brother and me to stay home alone. Now we are screwed.
