Kendra turned on the car AC as the sun beat through her windows. She knew she should have picked another place to meet Scott. Downtown never had any shady parking places. It was the middle of the summer in Georgia, and it wasn’t going to get any cooler any time soon.
She rechecked her phone. She was notorious for getting to places early. She didn’t like people to wait on her. She also wanted to watch Scott when he arrived because she still needed to know if she could trust him, especially since this wasn’t a typical case for her to pick up.
Kendra slid back into her seat and let the cool air wash over her skin. She heard a knock on her window shield and immediately pulled her gun. Scott stood there with his hands up in the air. She got out of the car.
“You could have texted that you were walking up to my car.”
“What fun would that have been?”
“It could have been your life if I was a person to pull the trigger and ask questions later.”
“Life in itself is a risk. Now grab your bag and passport and follow me.”
“I still don’t know why we need a passport.”
“Well, we are going to Canada. It’s where my first trace has led me. But, first, we need to convince an old employee to talk to us, and the only way they might talk is if we meet them in person.”
“Okay, but we are nowhere near the airport. So how are we getting to Canada?”
“We’re driving two cities over and taking my private plane from there. I’m not crazy about traveling from where I live. Also, before you ask, my plane isn’t under my real name.”
Kendra rolled her eyes. He was way too confident for her, and that made her nervous. When people are overly confident, that’s when they make mistakes. She knew she had to pay attention to every detail as they went through this case.
“So, what is the person’s name that we’re going to see?”
“It’s Greyson Wheeler. He worked as the VP of financials when our client worked there. Shortly after our client was put in prison, Greyson left the company and moved his family back to Canada. If that didn’t scream, “I know something,” I don’t know what does.”
“Does he know we’re coming? If not, it would be less of a chance for him to run.”
“He doesn’t know. I tried contacting him, and he blocked my number and email. I was able to get his information before all of that.”
“Okay, do you have a plan to get him to let us in his house?”
“We have a road trip and flight to plan.”
“Wait! This isn’t something you can do on the fly. You should have had a plan before we even agreed to be partners.” Kendra stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. A couple was walking toward them, and they stepped to the side.
Scott dropped his voice. “Listen, in this type of case. You have to sometimes figure things out on the fly. This isn’t one of your cases where every minute is planned. As long as you have your knowledge, that’s your foundation, and you build from there.”
“You’re lucky I believe in keeping my word, or I’d march straight back to my car and leave as if I never knew you.”
Scott grabbed her and pulled her to the ground. As they fell, a bullet flew past her face.
“Looks like you couldn’t back out even if you tried. Whoever knows I’m working on the case now knows you’re working with me. Let’s quickly get in the car and out of the city. Our road trip begins now.”
