She lived by three simple rules. 1. for the right money, she’d kill almost anyone. 2. but never kids. 3. And no dogs. She wasn’t a criminal. She was a freelance agent, and if the people she worked for had solid reasons to get rid of someone, she took the job. She wasn’t a monster. She still had morals. She’d seen agents take whatever they were given without thoroughly vetting clients, which had bitten them in the butt. She wasn’t about to let anyone ruin the reputation she worked so hard to achieve.
…………
It was Saturday morning, and Kendra rolled over to check the time. It was 9:00 am. It felt great to sleep in for once. Over the past few months, she had been so busy with cases she only slept about four hours a night. The last case lasted three solid weeks as the target was hard to nail down. So, she was glad to get sometime to sleep because she needed it.
Her phone began to buzz. It was probably her mom. She hadn’t spoken to her in a few days because of how busy she’d been. She picked it up, and it was an unknown number. She was about to let it go to voicemail, but she felt she needed to answer, so she did.
“Who is this.”
“That’s a rude way to answer the phone.” She didn’t know the voice on the other line.
“You called me with an unknown number. Tell me who you are before I hang up.”
“Okay, my name is Scott, and I have a job.”
“How did you get my personal number?”
“I have my ways.”
“I don’t accept jobs from my personal number, only my business number. So, I’ll be hanging up now.”
“Wait! At least let’s meet up at a coffee shop and hear me out. I promise you don’t want to turn this job down.” She didn’t need the money, but she knew that she’d get bored eventually with no work.
“Fine, when, and where?”
“The Blokke at 3:00 pm. I’ll be wearing a red hat.”
“Fine, I will see you there at that time.”
Kendra stretched and rechecked her time. She saw she had time to get in a boxing round before meeting Scott. She first called her mother to check in on her. Boxing ended up being two rounds and a hot shower. Before she left the house, she made sure she had her favorite pistol tucked into her boots and a knife strapped to her back. She wanted to be prepared in case she was walking into a trap.
……
The bell jingled when she walked through the door. She ordered a London fog from the barista and scanned the room. She spotted a guy with a red hat sitting in the far corner booth. They locked eyes, and he nodded. She grabbed her tea from the counter, walked over to the table, and sat down.
“What job do you have?”
“Wow, you just get right to the point.” She studied him. His curly brown hair stuck out the sides of his cap. He had icy blue eyes and a strong jawline. She wanted to learn his face so she’d remember it.
“This is a business meeting, not a social meeting. I’m not big on small talk.”
Scott chuckled as he studied the woman sitting in front of him. She had serious deep brown eyes. For an assassin agent, she had smooth skin with no scars. She wore her hair short which was smart in this line of work.
“Fine, let’s get down to business. I need a partner for this job, and I’ve learned that you’re the best at what you do—”
“I don’t do partners. I take jobs and complete them solo.”
“That’s a pity because this job requires both our skills. My technical background and your hunting skills.”
“If I took this job. how much would it pay?”
“Half a million dollars.” Kendra had to adjust herself to face him.
“What type of job pays that much money? I’m not a criminal.”
“Don’t worry. It’s not an illegal job. I’ve been hired to find a killer. 20-years ago, a man came home to find his entire family murdered. What’s worse is that he was framed for it by the people he worked for at the time. He had recently just found out things about the company that would hurt the country. They tried to silence him with money and different tactics, but it didn’t work, so they ensured he would be silenced.”
“Why would they murder his family? They could’ve just killed him.”
“It was better on them to make it look like he went crazy. It was how they were able to discredit him.”
“How do you know this story is true?”
“Before I officially took the case, I investigated it myself. I was able to hack into the company’s server and access hidden files and emails. Things that a normal police force would not have been able to access even if they had investigated the case thoroughly.”
“This isn’t the type of job I take. I don’t solve crimes. I’m hired to remove criminals.”
“I know, but I need your skills, and I know that I’ll be able to help this guy and bring justice to his family with you. I do this for a living, but this is the first time I need a partner to help. There is a possibility we could be killed on this case while trying to solve it.”
“That’s nothing new to me. My life is always on the line. But, since I don’t have any other jobs and I love justice, I guess I’m saying yes to a partner for the first time. But I do have one major rule. We kill no one unless we must. Torturing the truth out of someone is one thing but killing a nontarget is a no. Also, no hurting dogs.”
“The dog part is random, but I respect your wishes. I will send you the details on where to meet later, partner.” Scott extended his hand, and she shook it.
……….
Kendra had packed the last piece of clothing in her bag and zipped it up. She sent her mom a text to tell her she’d be out of town for work for a while and would catch up with her when she could. She walked downstairs to her car. She looked at her apartment building one last time. She realized she might not return this time, and she was at peace with that knowledge.
